About Gestalt Switch from Dunedin
Noble musical history of Dunedin aside, Gestalt Switch is four bored losers who like playing music, but have difficulty making friends. The band heard about a Dunedin music scene once, but figured it was only for people with friends and influence.
Drawing on influences from the indie pop rock and metal world, Gestalt Switch were once compared to early Jane's Addiction. More recently they’ve been compared to “very good” and “fucking good,” as well as “tops.” They favour a twin guitar attack akin to Television via the Cars, coupled with a rhythm section comparable to metronomic construction work. Described in New Zealand Musician as "local sex symbols" they make pleasing eye candy too.
In 2005 the band released it’s second self-released / funded EP Nothing, and went on a national tour to celebrate. The tour was not without its misadventure, but damn if it didn’t work out. A video clip for the track “Sick Man” is in post-production, and the next EP is in pre-production.
No rest for the friendless.
In 2004 their song "This Home" spent six weeks at the top of Radio One's charts, and this year "Nothing Has Changed" has spent an incredible eleven weeks in the charts, nine of which were at number one. “Nothing Has Changed" has also been receiving play on the nation’s bNet stations. “Moon Landing,” from the recently released Nothing EP has just entered Radio One’s charts.
Gestalt Switch has played with The Violent Femmes and Straitjacket Fits, and other fierce talent like Die! Die! Die! and Goodshirt. They've been televised twice: once on TV2's National Anthem, and also on Hyundai Sports Café. They fit into the latter like the individual members into a sports bar. Not well.
News from Geastalt Switch...
After a totally-rocking-dude last 12 months, in which the band saw Ericsson
Stadium when they played Big Day Out '06, lots of money come and go when
they received a video grant from NZOA, plenty of floors during tours -
including one with Jessica Something Jewish (USA) and Alps (AUS) - and
disappointment on each others' faces when SXSW asked them to come but didn't
pay for any of it, Gestalt Switch - Dunedin's answer to good music - is
finally recording their
first album!
The band has been busy locked away writing, developing and recording their
work, which, in a word, "rules". A clever little mixture of Fugazi, The
Chills and The Clean, Led Zeppelin and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, - a
left-of-centre Goodshirt, a centre-of-left Mint Chicks - there won't be any
room for fluff.
Gestalt Switch expects the album to be released at a point in time.
Hopefully Christmas time, so the extended Gestalt Switch family can all get
a nice gift. Ho, ho.
'Nothing', their 2nd EP, is officially nearing 'Flogging A Dead Horse'
territory, so the band decided to put out something else that will allow
them to continue to play in bars that give them free beer.
Thanks to HandClappin' Records of Australia, however, 'Nothing' has been
given a chance to stretch its little legs further afield, with 'distribution
in Australia, mate' now something Gestalt Switch's members can say with
pride and a whole lot of truth.
Until then, the band will continue doing what they love best: totally
rockin', dude. The band are planning 3 tours over the next 4 months and will
fill in the time playing shows at bars who give the band free beer,
recording, and making another damn video.
Love,
Gestalt Switch.

This is a band getting seriously good seriously quickly. All of their
recorded material - and remember Nothing only came out in spring - no longer
stands up to the live show. What more to say? - Max Johns, dunedinmusic.com
