Singer/songwriter Simon Maclaren formed sonic rockers the Subliminals after his stint in Loves Ugly Children. But after only two recordings in the space of a couple of years, the band were no more. The Crystal Chain EP (1999) and the album United States (2000) were much acclaimed however, with Sunday Star Times music critic Grant Smithies describing United States as "the best local rock album in years". Subliminals drummer Brendan Moran later went on to join fellow Flying Nun act The Hasselhoff Experiment.
