Big Day Out 2009

Big Day Out 2009

Saturday, 9th August 2008 12:00PM

Look, we know it's a long way out but the sneaky whispers have already started to surface.

**Click here for the first announcement**

Some are obviously just wish-lists while others have some solid substance, so here's our take on what the line up could be:

  • Metallica - New album out and BDO expats
  • Vampire Weekend - made good traction playing Aussie this year
  • Santogold - would make a good choice, with new albums this year
  • Beck - new album to boot
  • Headless Chickens - always need a nostalgic NZ band to play
  • N.E.R.D. - trying to get back to their roots, smaller festival circuits might suit
  • Kings of Leon - gearing up for new album
  • Collapsing Cities - welcome return after conquering UK
  • Nine Inch Nails - stirring up a storm with their free downloads and appearances at Lollapalooza
  • CSS - if they keep on their festival road they should make it
  • Black Kids - oh so hot right now
  • Bloc Party - gearing up for a comeback (not block sorry mc21)

I really wanted Mystery Jets but they're going to Rhythm and Vines I hear. Black Kids, Friendly Fires, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, or Foals would make my life that much better. Already got my ticket.

This is my pick:

MGMT
Daft Punk (haha really just hoping - maybe boiler room?)
Radiohead
Kings of Leon
Coldplay

Definately get Nine Inch Nails!!!!
Trent Reznor is musical/lyrical genius, if you want crowds to go nuttier than peanut butter bring NIN!!!
:D:D:D:D:D
If you do the milky bars are on me

My picks:
Justice - to headline the boiler room. Packed out the dance tents around Europe - absolutely insane.
The Raconteurs - Rocked the European festival circuit, and White Stripes have been to BDO before
Pendulum - well overdue for a BDO appearance
MGMT
Vampire Weekend
The Ting Tings - outside chance for a boiler room appearance
Simian Mobile Disco - wishful thinking on my part
My Bloody Valentine - wishful thinking, but been touring around Europe

Posted by guitaristuk2nz 3 years ago

right, these bands have all been confirmed to play soundwave, in oz in february/march, so most likely will not be coming to bdo:
NINE INCH NAILS
ALICE IN CHAINS, BLOODHOUND GANG, SCARS ON BROADWAY
LAMB OF GOD, ALKALINE TRIO, BILLY TALENT, THE RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS
FACE TO FACE, IN FLAMES, RIVAL SCHOOLS, ANBERLIN, THE SUBWAYS, EVERY TIME I DIE
DEVILDRIVER, FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND, LESS THAN JAKE, POISON THE WELL,
MADINA LAKE, NEW FOUND GLORY, FROM FIRST TO LAST, BEDOUIN SOUNDCLASH
HELLOGOODBYE, FINCH, GOLDFINGER, SAY ANYTHING, CHIODOS, SILVERSTEIN, SAVES THE DAY,
LACUNA COIL, 36 CRAZY FISTS, STRAYLIGHT RUN, EVERGREEN TERRACE, MINUS THE BEAR, MONEEN,
ACE ENDERS (THE EARLY NOVEMBER), I AM THE AVALANCHE, JAGUAR LOVE, UNEARTH, BAYSIDE
EMERY, HOUSTON CALLS, THE AUDITION, ATTACK IN BLACK, INNERPARTYSYSTEM, VALENCIA,
IN THIS MOMENT, ALESANA, THE RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS, HORSE THE BAND, MAYLENE & THE SONS OF DISASTER

most of those i've never heard of, but there's a few big names that would've been great. shows what bdo is becoming. we definitely need more festivals here.

God The Killers and/or Arctic Monkeys would be incredible. I've always wanted to see them but I wasn't 15 when The Killers came last time. I think Santogold is going to Rhythm and Vines so she won't be at BDO. Is it true The Teenagers and Metronomy are coming in Jan?
Posted by sagewills 3 years ago

user image
Metallica - in usa when big day out is on.
Vampire Weekend - all ready play aussie this year
Santogold -??? maybe
Beck - play v-fest aussie this year or last
Headless Chickens - maybe
N.E.R.D. -??? maybe
Kings of Leon - all ready been this year
Collapsing Cities - ??? maybe
Nine Inch Nails - ??? the dates fit but the tour is real big
CSS - bean here this year.
Black Kids - ??? maybe
Bloc Party - touring aussie in november
MGMT - playing aussie soon.

cant say as i have ever been to a festival, or not been, on the basis of what bands are palying-its the vibe that counts, glastonbury is a prime examlpe-some terrible line ups but always good fun to be had.
that said if the sex pistols played i would have to reconsider this policy!!! utter shite.

ARCTIC MONKEYS(THEY BETTER BE COMING!)

Mars Volta
MGMT
Someone that can do an awesome job like Dizzee did in the boiler room

And a good ol' headline act but not Metallica as then we will all be told wea are not hardcore enough by Metallica "fans"
Oasis?
Radiohead?
Queens Of The Stone Age?
ACDC?(that'll get the punters in)

The strokes(make a grand comeback at the big day out)
Posted by maddy101 3 years ago

user image
Dont get me wrong though.....I have thrashed my head around to old school Metallica and ACDC with great vigor in many drunken situations.. and still do during nostalgic flashes...

and Disturbed....nah sorry they still suck.

Posted by Yous_er_Name 3 years ago

My band.....they are called They Suck....and you are all in it.

Disturbed doing covers of They Suck....Oh no hang on they do suck!
ACDC doing covers of Metallica doing covers of Disturbed....WOW now that would They Suck like nothing else.

Maybe Mars Volta would be cool again.
Bjork
The Dweebs
the Snorkel Riders
Dead Kennedys....with Jello!!
WEEN......yeah man f**kin WEEN would slay Disturbed
Ex-Models
The Pixies.....Dammit Frank bring them down here !!!

The Go! Team
MIA
MGMT
NIN
Radiohead
Bloc Party
Portishead
The Specials
Justice
Ladytron
Hadouken!

Yeah i know I'm dreaming but what are ya gonna do about it!

Also, does anyone know anything about the killers? Wikipedia says theyre confirmed, but its not exactly reliable, and the killers websites are varying shades of useless when it comes to actually getting information. They have a new album to promote so it'd make sense...

I would so be there if the Sex Pistols or Led Zep played, but I guess that's all wishful thinking...
I suppose more realistically, it would be cool to have bands like Nine inch nails, bloc party or the arctic monkeys.

How about aesop rock? We need to bring aes to nz!

Posted by jess dalegend 3 years ago

Why Hate On Metallica? They Made History ... You's Didn't!
However, the more headlines the better!
Bands like Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold!
Singers like Brendon Urie and The Ozzy Man!

Rock On!
Posted by Rianne 3 years ago

user image
Metallica would be good.
Same with Vampire weekend and kings of leon.
I doubt MGMT will stay after their Aus tour.

My best bet on the headliners are
Coldplay (or so say rumours..)
The Grates
The Living End
The Vines (maybe - they want to go commercial so this is their chance)
The Presets (just because they are EVERYWHERE)
The Wombats
Girl talk

and possibly powderfinger, abbe may or laura marling. and maybe violent soho for a local act.
Posted by kfitz 3 years ago

user image
Metallica can fu*k off,
Radiohead should do there own show here (we've got vector now!!! Please come!!!)
Beck has always put on a spectacular show
Bloc Party would be sweet
CSS were crap at the K.A. And no way near as cute as there vids either, Deftones will have a new album out, so will Mastodon but i hope no really good bands come... i'm greedy & want them all to do their own shows, i get pissed off every year because they assume if you like Rage you wont like Arcade Fire and put them on at the same time... make Big Day Out a Big Week End Out!! 3 day festy is what we need. Let us pitch a tent. Amen
Posted by banjo83 3 years ago

user image
I reckon Radiohead could possibly come...they're touring in Aus round December/Jan so it would be pretty rude if they missed us out haha. even though they said they're never coming back here. Fingers crossed! And that would also mean MGMT would come too!
Posted by 0mental0piracy0 3 years ago

user image
What about the Verve? I would love to see them headline! Other cool ones I reckon could be:
The Raconteurs (and bring Meg along for a sideshow!),
Feeder,
The Subways,
Weezer,
The Fratellis,
The Zutons,
Kaiser Chiefs
Franz Ferdinand must be bringing a new album out too?
Bet you can tell I'm British...
Posted by guitaristuk2nz 3 years ago

METALLICA PLEASE! I would like to see Courtney Love live again too.
Posted by falconess 3 years ago

MGMT probably won't come. They are touring Aus in the first week of December. Bloc Party might come though. Hmm.
Posted by joshuarobert 3 years ago

user image

Posted by smalley 3 years ago

user image
NO METALLICA PLEASE!!

Oasis will headline
Weezer
MGMT
Bloc Party
Portishead
Nas
Kanye West
Headless Chickens.

Can see this lineup happening. But if metallica headlines, i wont be going. another year full of meatheads. bluh
