On Saturday, February 7th, Louisa Nicklin is joined by Family Band for a show with a sea view at the Anglican Church Hall in Coromandel Town. Enjoy the height of summer with these Tāmaki Makaurau-based musicians known for dazzling live performances.
Louisa Nicklin’s folk-inflected alt-rock sound combines an impulse for both directness and subtlety. Bittersweet, catchy, her songs move flawlessly between tenderly intimate and sweeping rock ballad energy. A finalist in the 2025 Aotearoa Music Awards for Best Alternative Artist, Nicklin has cemented herself as a songwriter to be reckoned with. Her 2024 sophomore album The Big Sulk (produced by Shayne P. Carter) feels expansive, urgent and timeless. Recorded with long-time bandmates Eamon Edmundson-Wells and Mason Fairey in the Coromandel bush, the dark lushness of the location can be felt keenly across the work. Outside of her own song-crafting, Nicklin performs frequently with peers and collaborators, recently with fellow Auckland-based musician Jazmine Mary, and with Carter on his Aotearoa Dimmer tours.
Sam Shepherd, Maté Vella and Brandee Thorburn are noise group Family Band. Formed in 2023 while all three members were flatting together, Family Band take influence from Chicago noise rock and late 00's Trans-Tasman post-punk. Well-loved performers in the local scene, this is music that makes you want to move. Their punchy, no holds barred 2024 EP The Dog Box (recorded by Martin Philips at Auckland’s now defunct space The Vault) elegantly plays the line between chaos and control, always keeping the insistent, driving repetition of its sound feeling fresh.
