Founded in 2013, Wellington-based General Kala's first live performance was two years later, by which time they had a 90-minute set of original, synthesiser-driven music. The original lineup of Cusiel (vocal and synth), Spence (synths and vocal) and Mathiassen (drums) is still in place, with six EPs released this year (plus another six by 2026) through Pulse Science Recordings.
Taking their lead from classic analog-synth acts of the late 1970s and early '80s, as well as progressive and rock luminaries of both decades, Kala infuses visceral, soaring, melodic dance composition with vintage synthesis and syncopated rhythm (courtesy of Mathiassen, also drummer for Shapeshifter and Kora).
Now based in Auckland, the band will bring their singular sound back to Wellington - performing at the Rogue and Vagabond January the 16th.
