Ali Whitton’s music blends folk, alt-country and bluegrass into a warm, woody sound centered on intimate storytelling.
Born in New Zealand and raised on the North Yorkshire moors, he forged his craft through open-mic nights, band projects and solo stints in London and Paris before settling in Aotearoa. Performing as Lost Bird, Ali built a reputation on New Zealand’s acoustic circuit; encouragement and support from longtime friend Ed Sheeran led to studio time and a prolific songwriting run.
Ali opened three concerts for Ed in his 2018 NZ Tour.
Between the Forest and the Stars, his debut album, distils those years into richly layered arrangements produced by Dave Khan and co-produced with Reb Fountain, featuring fiddle, harmonies and locomotive rhythms that nod to early Johnny Cash while retaining a contemporary, melancholic edge. The record’s imagery — rural landscapes, longing and quiet introspection — frames Ali’s vulnerable lead vocals and narrative songs like “Quiet My Heart,” “Hopeful Heart” and “Like the Forest,” marking a confident arrival for a singular singer-songwriter.
