Experience an intimate and deeply moving Easter‑season concert, Miserere: Lamentations for Easter, held at 3pm on Saturday 11 April at St Joseph’s Chapel.
At the heart of the programme is Gregorio Allegri’s hauntingly beautiful Miserere Mei, Deus, a timeless masterpiece renowned for its soaring melodies and ethereal serenity. Under the direction of Daniel Kelly, the pure tone and harmony of unaccompanied chamber choir Southern Consort of Voices is also showcased an excerpt of Thomas Tallis’s Lamentations of Jeremiah and the deep emotions of Thomas Tomkins’s When David Heard, a powerful interpretation of a father’s grief.
The concert travels through centuries of choral tradition, weaving together early polyphony by Josquin des Prez with 20th‑century works by Pablo Casals and David Childs. The programme continues with Antonio Lotti’s Crucifixus, Josef Rheinberger’s serene Abendlied, Anton Bruckner’s luminous Os Justi, and a beautiful setting of The Lord’s Prayer by Russian composer Nikolay Kedrov. Finally, the mood is echoed in John Tavener’s 1993 work, Song for Athene.
This concert offers a contemplative experience for the Easter season in the intimate and generous acoustic of St Joseph's Chapel, behind the Cathedral on Rattray Street.
