The wave doesn’t conform to the shape of the rock. It smashes it. The sea doesn’t pretend to be hospitable. It summons courage. And a shantyband never licks the captain's boot. They release another EP!
The best shanties invite us to open our hearts along with the bottle. To draw strength from camaraderie and drown our pettinesses. To seek the rough edge of the wave and savour the salt within. And so, the WSSS have issued a call to arms with their new collection: Never Mind the Rowlocks, Here’s the Wellington Sea Shanty Society.
Never fear if you find yourself adrift on a sea of AI slop, lapping at your hull, lulling you to sleep — Lake Davineer, Vorn dont Le Père Était Marin, Young Nic, Tomas el Largo, and Louis Quatorze are back again to fill your sails and slap the codfish slime clean off your cheeks.
Just when everyone is lamenting the empty galleys of the good ship Wellington, and those ol’ scurvy-mongers are promising renewed bounty if you would only tack five degrees to port or starboard come election time, these songs remind us the sea at least will sustain us, and there’s rum and (metaphorical) guns for them that wants to fight.
