Bikes In Space - Live at Goblin as part of the Upside Down Lounge series. Experimental jazz, free every Wednesday, up the blue stairs, from 8pm.
Jonathan Crayford and Joe Kaptein are Bikes In Space, an electronic vintage keyboards and drums driven fully improvised psychedelic groove space junk ensemble that sounds like what it might be like to be in the brain of Philip K Dick, Ursula Le Guin or Margaret St Clair - except more. Maybe a sonic smoothie of certain elements of Silver Apples, Can, Weather Report, Andy Kaufman, and Rodney Dangerfield. Decide for yourself. Each and every gig is a plunge into the unknown, enhanced and elevated by the exciting unpredicatability of a different drummer for each performance.
Bikes In Space have a forthcoming album out on LP/digital later in 2026 on Jandal Records, a hybrid live album featuring a selection of performances and instant compositions from gigs across 2025-2026. They have also recently been holed up in a studio on K Road recording hours of improvisations over a couple weeks in June, each behind a fort of keyboards and synthesisers and various noisy implements, with a half a dozen killer local drummers (only one at a time!) passing through on the drum stool at various points over the sessions. Stay tuned.
