Doing the Most: A Pro-Trans Drag Fundraiser Show” is an opulent and over-the-top celebration of queer and trans resilience, featuring all-out performances from heavy hitters of the Wellington drag scene. Come for a night of extravagant and maximalist drag performances, knowing that the price of your ticket will have a direct, tangible impact on the safety and wellbeing of two members of our trans whānau.
About Nereida:
Nereida is a Black trans woman who came to NZ fleeing the violence in the United States. She spent years working tirelessly to support the Disabled community in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), whilst saving for gender affirming surgery, only to lose everything after racism, transphobia, and ongoing attacks on marginalised communities in Aotearoa impacted her job and therefore her visa.
During her time in Te Whagnanui-a-Tara, Nereida contributed to our queer and trans community by supporting local queer events, speaking out against anti-trans discrimination at organised protests and through her online platforms. She always invests so much of herself into every space she enters. Unfortunately, Nereida has been forced to leave Wellington; a long battle with workplace transphobia resulted in the loss of her sponsored work visa. Now, Nereida and her partner Lucien, a trans man, drag performer, and artist who has also been a vibrant contributor to Wellington’s local queer and activist spaces, are in Australia, isolated from the friendships and community they took years to build. Together, they are starting from scratch. They're trying to secure some safety by fulfilling the immigration requirements needed to stay in Australia. A key part of that safety is funding Nereida’s gender-affirming FFS surgery, which they have been saving and fundraising for with very little resources.
About the Event:
“Doing the Most: A Pro-Trans Drag Fundraiser Show” aims to draw together members of the local community to raise funds to help cover the financial costs of securing safety for Nereida and Lucien. All of the funds raised by this event will be given to Nereida and Lucien. It will be used to directly pay for Nereida’s gender affirming surgery, for the visa she needs to stay in Australia, and the travel costs for accessing the surgery.
