Join us for an evening of short presentations from some of our Darkroom community members about what they get up to beyond making music, performing & attending gigs here!
Darkroom's music community is a wonderfully diverse and interesting group of people, and while we know everyone loves live music, we want to give folks from the Darkroom community an opportunity to share what else they do outside of music. This series welcomes folks to talk about their hobbies, studies, work, art and niche, special interest topics!
Our guest speakers for October are:
Satori Mayell - An Artist and Ecologist's Trip to the Subantarctic Islands
Neil Heslop - Wired for Sound
Bonnie Judkins - Lighting Design and Event Production
Each presenter will deliver a short 20min presentation featuring a slide show, physical props, loads of fun facts, and some laughs along the way! Plus plenty of time for questions and discussion to follow.
Artist Satori Mayell recounts her scholarship and expedition painting her way around the remote Subantarctic Islands.
Halfway between Aotearoa and Antarctica lies the 'Roaring 40s' and 'Furious 50s'; a wild and blistering wilderness of ocean and perpetual wind with a few lone islands serving as sanctuaries for all the birds and beasts of the Southern Ocean. See Satori's photography, paintings, and vivid descriptions of fields of giant Subantarctic flowers in bloom, rafts of penguins diving from cliffs, ten thousand albatross filling the sky, and her personal hunt for the near-mythical Subantarctic Snipe, all while learning about what makes these islands so unique and how we can protect them for future generations.

Neil Heslop has worked as an Audiologist for 28 years, including spending the last 23 years working for a charitable cochlear implant programme. Neil has offered to guide us on a sojourn through anything hearing-related, with a focus on his specialty area of cochlear implants. Neil will ralk us through the anatomy of how we hear, dancing hair cells, and a bit of an overview of how we measure hearing, and what happens when we lose it (at music venues or festivals for example) including tinnitus.

Bonnie Judkins is a local event producer and lighting expert with two decades of experience under her belt in the live events sector. She has worked as a designer, educator and operator on everything from tour management to community festivals. Here to talk to us about lighting design and event management as career pathways, plus telling us about some of the cool projects she's gotten to work on,
