The Nelson Jazz Club Big Band is the latest incarnation of a group of jazz enthusiasts who pursue their musical interests in a large ensemble setting: a traditional stage band, playing syncopated written arrangements with improvised interludes.
Nelson’s own big band experience includes a repertoire focused around the great music written especially for a large ensemble, songs from the dawn of jazz in the 1920s to contemporary arrangements, and classic arrangements from the golden big band eras of the 1940s and 1950s.
The Big Band includes some of the best jazz players currently in Nelson, and is rehearsed by Mick Dowrick. The combination of talent with many years of musical experience creates a great sound that always proves popular with audiences.
