Silver Scroll Winner, Tami Neilson at Leigh Sawmill. Having already won three New Zealand Music Awards for Best Country Album in 2009, 2010, and 2012, last year she was awarded the prestigious Apra Silver Scroll, for the New Zealand song of the year, “Walk (Back to Your Arms).” Opening for Neilson is the phenomenal Skyscraper Stan Woodhouse and local alt-country singer songwriter and drummer Will Wood.
With a soulful voice straight from the golden age of country and rockabilly music, Tami Neilson has been described as “A red-hot honky-tonker, somewhere between Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson with perhaps just a little bit of Peggy Lee sophistication.” (- Nick Bollinger, NZ National Radio). Born in Canada, she has called New Zealand home for nearly a decade. Neilson was born with music in her blood and toured as a young girl with the Neilson Family Band, opening for the likes of Johnny Cash. In the last couple of years, Neilson has performed at international festivals in New Zealand, Australia and North America, headlined 6 national tours, and opened for Emmylou Harris at Vector Arena and Pokey LaFarge at The Great South Pacific Tuning Fork.
Neilson’s explosive new album “Dynamite!” has been receiving rave reviews, including 5 Stars in the NZ Herald, claiming “This world-class album is a major statement from an artist at the top of her lyrical and vocal game.”, while National Radio NZ states “I don’t reckon there’ll be a better country album released this year.”
With a repertoire of tunes that run the gamut from haunting ballads to hand-clapping, harmony-infused numbers, Neilson is a first class performer and her shows are not to be missed.
Melbourne based, Skyscraper Stan Woodhouse (born in Auckland), plays troubadour rock ‘n’ roll. In 2013, he released Tall Stories with his band The Commission Flats. The EP spent five weeks on the AMRAP NOW charts. Woodhouse will bring his guitar and a collection of well crafted songs for a stomping solo set.
Praise for Tami Neilson
Neilson blends the ambience of Old West saloons with the pastel palette of a 1950s beach musical, and her soulful bellow breathes modern life into a vintage collection. - The 10 Best Country Music Records of 2014 -Grady Smith, The Guardian
Her voice alone will stop you in your tracks, so powerful and full of colour is it. - Lydia Jenkin – The NZ Herald
Praise for Skyscraper Stan
“The energy is magnificent: Stan jumps across stage, he howls, he gestures with his hands to add emphasis to the story he is laying out before you.” - Tone Deaf
