2014’s Mercury Prize award winners Young Fathers have announced a one-off intimate showcase gig for January 2016 in Auckland. The highly acclaimed Scottish trio will play Auckland’s Cassette 9 Monday January 11 on the back of one Australian festival performance.
On the back of the release of their latest album White Men Are Black Men Too, the band have performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, Roskilde and Latitude. January will see them bring a live show which has been described as “powerful, left-field and hypnotic” to a crazy intimate club venue.
The group will bring their ferocious live show to New Zealand for one show only, Monday January 11 at Auckland’s Cassette 9. Tickets available now from Under The Radar.
Young Fathers burst on the international scene in 2014 with the release of their debut album DEAD. Their chaotic and complicated blend of hip-hop, pop quickly garnered a big following, and let many know (us included) that there’s quite the hip-hop scene coming out of Edinburgh.
DEAD quickly became one of the most critically loved of 2014, and Young Fathers won the Mercury Prize for the release, upsetting heavy hitters like Damon Albarn, and indie darlings like Jungle and FKA twigs. Rather than rest of their laurels, the band travelled to Berlin to continue working on new material in a freezing basement near the railway yards.
The result is 2015’s White Men Are Black Men Too. An album which has appeared on countless “Best of 2015” lists, and one which has been described as “a perfect storm of influences and talent”. On the back of a year of relentless touring and huge festival slots, January will see their first visit to New Zealand in a setting which will get larger which each future visit.
