Aroha String Quartet: Haihong Liu & Simeon Broom (violins), Zhongxian Jin (viola) & Robert Ibell (cello)
Tango Ballet Suite, a musical street drama in six scenes for string quartet by Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzolla, is at the centre of this colourful and varied concert presented by the Aroha Quartet. It is framed by Haydn’s vivacious String Quartet in G Op. 33/5 and Mendelssohn’s tragic and turbulent final quartet No 6 in F minor Op. 80. The programme is rounded out by ‘Whakatipua’, a beautiful work by well-known NZ composer Anthony Ritchie that evokes the mountain landscape of Central Otago.
