Tiki Taane returns to his humble beginnings.
Possibly one of the country’s most well known and diverse artists and producers, Christchurch born and raised Tiki Taane returns to his hometown next month to perform at Blue Smoke in The Tannery. Despite this being his first gig in the bar, Tiki is no stranger to the location, having rehearsed there for many years with his first ever band.
“Back in 1991, we had a heavy metal band called Cultivation, and would rehearse at the drummer’s warehouse which was situated where The Tannery now is”, explains Taane. “Its an awesome feeling to be coming back to the same spot 25 years later with my solo gig, and returning to my humble beginnings.”
Stepping out as a solo artist from Christchurch-grown leading band Salmonella Dub in 2007, Tiki has established himself as an exceptional musician and producer since. Perhaps his most well-known tune is his beautiful acoustic love ballad ‘Always On My Mind’, which rose to #1 and broke two all-time NZ records – it sat in the charts for a record 55 weeks and was also the first-ever digital single to achieve platinum sales. His latest tune ‘No Place Like Home’ was released early February and written to remind us all to appreciate our home, land, sea and people within “because thats where the true spirit and power of this country lies”.
Currently, with many studio projects under construction, Tiki is working on his fifth solo album due for release in 2017. Touring as a solo artist around both NZ and Australia armed with only a guitar, a microphone, some pedals, and his catchy anthems, Tiki’s popular acoustic set has been a constant headliner at major music festivals and events for the last 8 years. Renowned for bringing a vibrant energy to the stage that is both infectious and inviting, there’s no doubt those present at Blue Smoke can expect a sterling evening with Tiki.
