One of New Zealand music’s hidden gems, Terror of The Deep have built up a solid reputation for their excellent live performances and their engaging, self-described “electric folk music”.
The band formed in 2008, originally as the solo project of Oliver Dixon (guitar, vocals), however with the additions of Taipua Adams (Sheitgeist, Special Olympics) on bass and backing vocals in 2009 and William Daymond (The Flying Sorcerers, Axemen) on drums and guitars in 2010, Terror of the Deep became a fully-fledged band. Tom Watson (HLAH, Cassette, Lawrence Arabia) joined on keyboards in 2013. Since then they have played with international acts like The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Wedding Present and Moon Duo, and local bands such as David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights, The Bats, The Stereo Bus and Sneaky Feelings. They were also the support act for NZ leg of The Phoenix Foundation’s Fandango tour in 2013, and have visited Australia three times.
Terror of the Deep have released three full length albums (2010’s Airport Underneath the Done, 2011’s Permanent Weekend and 2015’s Space Epic) as well as a five song EP (Death of the Gideon) in 2013. Both Death of the Gideon and Space Epic have been pressed on vinyl by Selection Records, their New York based record label. Songs off these releases were not only got given generous airplay by NZ student radio, but were also picked up by overseas outlets such as BBC6 in the UK and several US college radio stations.
They are currently nearing the completion of their fourth album, which as a twenty-song double album will be their most ambitious offering to date. It has a tentative release date of early to mid-2018.
