Burns Night is on at the Dunedin Folk Club on the nearest Sunday to the Bard's birthday. He was born on 25 January 1759.
Why Burns? Robbie Burns is the ultimate folk hero, known all over the world as a great thinker and writer. He was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1759. One of seven children of a struggling tenant farming family, like his parents he struggled all his life under the yoke of poverty. But he had gifts and loved the music and stories of his native land. He collected them; improved them and added to them his own compositions. He sang of love and beauty, but railed against the society that kept the poor in their place.
These are songs of humour, beauty, love, anger and longing; all told in a beautiful, lyrical style, and we have gathered an array of artists who will bring you an excellent, Burns Night.
