Winston Surfshirt cross the ditch from Australia to headline their biggest New Zealand show yet with support from BENE & MELODOWNZ ??
Playing Wellingtons The Hunter Lounge on Friday 1 March this will be a night not to miss ????
Introducing Winston Surfshirt, the Sydney-based six-piece quickly winning over fans and industry alike with their unique blend of funk, soul and hip-hop.
With a lauded and unique versatility in their sound, Winston Surfshirt’s past performances range from sold out headline shows across national Australian tours, to festival billing at Splendour in the Grass, Spilt Milk, Falls Music and Arts Festival, & FIELD DAY.
Leading 2017 the band released their now gold-certified debut single, ’Be About You’ from their debut album, Sponge Cake, a 16-track melange of summer sounds blurring the lines between funk and hip-hop, bound together with airy vocals and bold brass. The band received nods from international tastemakers Jason Bentley (KCRW), Huw Stephens & Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1), Lauren Laverne (BBC Radio 6), Beats 1 host Zane Lowe & Sir Elton. John publicly labelling them his favourite band of the moment.
After earning triple j feature album, the band went on to sell out all 10 shows across the country on their national Sponge Cake tour, marking them as one of Australia’s most prolific upcoming acts. The breakout act have come full speed towards 2018s tail end with new music, dropping brand new single For the Record on Sweat It Out. For The Record fuses Winstons buttery vocals with the mellow atmospherics of a dimly lit jazz bar, as crooning horns slice between the bands signature hip-hop laced production.
If you know, you know ⁉️
Joining Winston Surfshirt is BENE, one of New Zealand’s hottest new acts from 2018. A little bit of indie-slack and a little bit of R’n’B swing, Bene has been recording with producer Josh Fountain (known for his work with MAALA, Leisure, Thomston, and Theia). Despite only two single releases under her belt, Bene has already hit five and a half million Spotify streams (and climbing!) and a headline spot at the 2019 Laneway Festival – there’s no denying that she’s on the up-and-up!
Rounding off the headliners for the night is Bronson Price, aka MELODOWNZ, self-described urban poet and artist hailing from Avondale. MELODOWNZ is one of New Zealand’s favourite and fastest rising rappers since the release of his EP Avontales in 2017. With two more album released since then, MELODOWNZ is not to be missed.
