Lines of Flight 2019
The much-loved Lines of Flight festival returns to Dunedin in March 2019. First held in 2000 in conjunction with the first Dunedin Fringe Festival and including a 2012 one-off in post-quake Christchurch, the biennial festival of experimental music will be celebrating its eleventh season.
The 2019 lineup features a mix of local, national, and international performers. Among those already confirmed are Melbourne guitar/drum duo Torrential Brain, Wellington turntablist extraordinaire Alphabethead, Aotearoa free-noise godfathers A Handful of Dust, drone maestro K-Group, and Dunedin free jazz act Sewage (with Auckland saxophonist Jeff Henderson). Melbourne’s dream improvisers Is There A Hotline, Hermione Johnson and Nell Thomas’ keyboard duo Cave and Bush, the Dead C’s Michael Morley with his solo guitar project Gate, multi-media minimalist trancers UMU with Lady Lazer Light, female noise-rockers Gorge and the Futurians/LSD Fundraiser guitar combo Space Wolf 2 are also on the bill, with more acts to be announced. Kiran Dass will be providing her superlative DJing skills as part of the festival.
In addition to the previous acts, we are excited to add the following: a very rare performance by guitar drone legend Roy Montgomery, plus sets by incendiary trio Carter/Morley/Yeats, Wellington’s impressionistic Waterfalls, Dunedin’s no-wave poppers Negative Nancies, and Anita Clark’s violin/vocal project Motte. Dunedin psych improv band Eye (including founding member Nathan Thompson), Smith, Longmore & Meung, Radio Cegeste, and Kiseki Uragi complete the lineup.
The music is diverse and extends across a wide range of genres, eg improvisation, rock, jazz, noise, folk and electronic, with all performers having a common approach to pushing musical boundaries.
The festival will be held over four shows, to be held at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the Port Chalmers Pioneer Hall. Each show will have separate musical acts, with many accompanied by projected experimental film.
