Newtown Rocksteady return to the Boathouse on 9th January for the Nelson leg of their 2020 summer tour, joined by special guest vocalist Israel Starr.
Comprised of capable members of Wellington’s vibrant music scene, Newtown Rocksteady was founded in 2007 and has been deepening its connection to Jamaican music ever since. Its members have been and are involved in numerous other groups including The Nudge, Hikoikoi, Fly My Pretties, Trinity Roots, Brockaflowersaurus-rex, Fraser Ross, French For Rabbits, Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band and The Dancing and Drinking Society to name a few.
The band has its roots firmly embedded in the traditions of Jamaican rocksteady, ska and reggae music. Make no mistake, this music has always had an intimate connection with dancing and that legacy continues. This is groove based music that hits you in the chest then makes you move the rest. They will be spreading the love on their South Island tour in January 2020.
