Dave Wilson presents his original music featuring him on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet in an ensemble including his quintet and strings. T
his project's improvisation-based compositions reflect environments and communal experiences in Aotearoa and beyond, from the sounds of regenerating native bush to the social worlds of Wellington nightlife.
Having grown up in the Chicago area, Dave built his career in Los Angeles and worked as a performer and researcher in eastern Europe before moving to Wellington in 2016. Drawing on his experience in jazz, popular music, and more, the compositions of this project feature styles including bebop, modal jazz, the blues, and the maqam traditions of the Middle East.
This performance brings together some of Aotearoa's leading musicians in an improvising ensemble:
Callum Allardice (guitar)
Seth Boy (bass)
Amy Brookman (violin)
Ben Hunt (trumpet)
Monique Lapins (violin)
Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa (drums)
Dave Wilson (tenor saxophone and bass clarinet)
