Over the last few weeks, the utter destruction affecting many in our communities has become apparent. For venues in the worst affected locations on the East Coast, our hearts go out to you. Smash Palace and Dome Bar in Gisborne. The Cabana, Paisley Stage, Common Room and Spaceship have all been devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle. These venues are currently unable to trade at full capacity, if at all, and won’t be opening their doors for touring acts for quite some time. However, these venues are playing a vital part in supporting their communities right now, and these gigs are to show that wider music whānau of Aotearoa are here to support these venues most affected.

Says Lucy Suttor of Dick Move, “With 4/5 of us having been born or raised in Tairawhiti and Hawke’s Bay, this show is especially close to our hearts. These communities are used to mobilising, mucking in and fending for themselves, and don’t often ask for help, even in times of a devastating crisis. A gig to help them get back on their feet feels like the least we can do. We can’t wait to be back to playing shows on the mighty East Coast!”

Established by a group of passionate people from the New Zealand music scene in 2020 during the first wave of COVID, Save Our Venues assisted in raising almost half a million dollars in donations for live music venues around Aotearoa, helping ensure their survival and playing a vital role in strengthening communities.

Once again, Aotearoa is faced with a crisis that requires us to work together to #saveourvenues

Says - Taylor MacGregor of Save Our Venues. “A collective response to support our music venue whānau is as important as ever. We see this as the start of a long-running campaign to support venues in the hardest-hit regions as they struggle to perform their crucial role in their communities in the coming weeks and months”,

Continues MacGregor, “This period will be critical to venues’ resilience and their ability to make their important contribution to people in the region - as community hubs and providers of mental well-being to those who perform and attend live music.”

Save Our Venues has set up a Givealittle page so people can donate directly to help ensure the survival of these venues. This Givealittle page is also open for other fundraising gigs to donate to, Save Our Venues can offer advice if you’re planning a fundraiser for the music community in the region. https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/save-our-east-coast-music-venues
