Dave Wilson presents two concerts celebrating the release of his highly-anticipated album 'Ephemeral' for quintet and string quartet on Thelonious Records. The performances will feature Dave on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet with a lineup of some of Aotearoa's leading musicians at the beautiful newly refurbished Newtown Community Centre Theatre (corner of Rintoul and Colombo Streets, see photos above).
Live visuals by Rachel Neser will be integrated into each performance in a special collaboration designed for the record release.
'Ephemeral' is a set of original compositions for Dave's improvising ensemble – string quartet, trumpet, guitar, bass, drums, and him on tenor and bass clarinet – that musically explore the brevity of human and other relationships. Each performance will present a unique version of the album's material, which ranges from high-energy grooves, tuneful melodies, and intense collective improvisations to meditative drones and happy/sad contemplations. The performances will also feature readings of the poetry that inspired some of the compositions, as well as readings of the vinyl record's liner notes. 'Ephemeral' builds on Dave's previous album projects 'SLANT' (2019), 'In Passing' (2017), and 'On the Face Place' (2016) with CSPS Ensemble.
Having grown up in the Chicago area, Dave built his career in Los Angeles and worked as a researcher and performer in Skopje, North Macedonia. He moved to Aotearoa in 2016 and, since then, has become a key contributor to the music community of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
Before each concert, please join Dave and other Thelonious Records artists for a hang. Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase (all ages licensed).
