CLUBE DA ESQUINA is the name of one of the most important musical movements of Brazil and of two double albums recorded by the Clube da Esquina collective in 1972 and 1978 and is in every list of the best albums ever produced in Brazil.
Noted Brazilian singer Alda Rezende grew up with this music in her native Minas Gerais. and her quintet will perform some of the fiercely original and idiosyncratic classics of Clube da Esquina.
Together with Tropicália, Clube da Esquina is regarded as the Brazilian musical movement that achieved the greatest international resonance in the post-Bossa Nova period.
This is not what is usually recognised as Brazilian music. It is a hard to classify mixture of Brazilian genres, Afro-folkloric Brazilian and Hispanic music, with generous dollops of classical, jazz, rock’n roll and psychedelia. It is a lush, ornate sound, harmonically elaborate and yet quietly transgressive in its lyrics.
This is an unique opportunity to listen to this Brazilian genre which is very rarely presented in Aotearoa, and experience the soulful sounds on Alda Rezende.
