SPACE, HOW SO CAN YOU GO ?
A mid-week evening of rare activity. Three live acts utilising differing approaches in working directly with the spatial properties of sound. Visiting Naarm/ Melbourne soundmaker Eamon Sprod graces Space Academy with support from local space shifters Roads to Toads and Gemma Syme & Nic Woollaston (with mystery guest).

EAMON SPROD

Working with sound borrowed from urban spaces australian-based sound artist eamon sprod/TARAB pursues what might be called an anti-naturalist field recording practice. Fragmenting and re-contextualising the audio material he forages and collects to shape oblique narratives, false leads and listening spaces from within the everyday. Purposefully working with the sonic material he finds at hand to hear and see what might happen when things are drawn together and pulled apart. Sound is often introduced to space through the use of simple means. Discarded household items or physical elements of rooms are transformed into unique speakers or percussive sound generators. In turn, speakers are encouraged to move beyond their role as replicators of pre-existing sounds, instead to act as sounding things in themselves.
Working previously as TARAB, Eamon Sprod has presented performances and installations within Australia, Europe, Japan, Korea, North and South America; participating in festivals including Liquid Architecture (AU); Activating The Medium (US); Observatorie (ES); Bogong: Electric (AU); Tsonami Festival de Arte Sonore (CL); Amplify 2020: Quarantine (US/Online); and the Lausanne Underground Film Festival (CH).
Eamon Sprod/TARAB’s compositions have been published by labels including Naturestrip (AU); 23five (US); Kaon (FR ); Semperflorens (RU); Unfathomless (BE); Cronica (PT), solo and with Artificial Memory Trace; Aposiopese (FR/BE); Swarming (FR) with Eric La Casa; Hemisphäreの空虚 (AU); F E R N S recordings (FR); and multiple works on his sonicrubbish micro-imprint formed in 2018. His first solo release under his own name is coming later this year on Aposiopese (FR/BE).

ROADS TO TOADS

Roads to Toads is the improvisational duo of Reuben Derrick (Poltroon, Swing42 etc etc) on reeds/ extensions, and Rory Dalley (IRD, No Exit etc etc) on objects/ extensions. Together they tease out sound often at the quieter end of dynamic range, with amplified small sounds and a broad use of acoustic space.

GEMMA SYME/ NIC WOOLLASTON

For this evening, Gemma Syme and Nic Woollaston will perform a live piece for Space Bass, with a surprise guest musician. Syme (well known for various artistic endeavours including solo as Instant Fantasy, and in the group Fantasing), discussed with Nic Woollaston (master instrument builder and creator of sonic sculptures), the idea of an instrument based on the magnificent Constance Demby’s Space Bass. Which brings us to this rare opportunity…
