The Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra, featuring vocalist Maya Satake, present highlights from their recent Quincy Jones tribute show, performing jazz standards by Ella Fitzgerald and funk rock classics by Steely Dan. In the second set, alto saxophonist Ethan Burton will lead a six piece band including Louis Robertson (trumpet), Benji Pickering (trombone), Matthew Tait (piano), Guthrie Wakelin (bass) and Seth Sinclair (drums), presenting a variety of jazz standards that will form the basis for some funky and extended improvisations.
Maya Satake is a talented vocalist who recently performed a sold-out show with the Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra, performing the Quincy Jones arrangements of jazz standards performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. On the night, Satake will sing the numbers Ain't Misbehavin, Shiny Stockings, Deed I do and the Iconic Blue Skies. The first set will be completed with some Steely Dan numbers, including the vocal Home at Last, as well as instrumental versions of Josie and Hey Nineteen.
The Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra is directed by Bill Martin, a pianist, saxophonist, composer and director of the Dunedin Jazz Club. Over the years, he has presented many concerts at Hanover Hall, including tributes to Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, as well as performing with touring artists from around New Zealand. As the director of the Dunedin Jazz Foundation, he aims to raise the standard of jazz performance in our city and create performance opportunities for young jazz musicians who are working hard to develop their own voices.
