Atavism

Children's Letters to God & Special Guests
As neoteny recapitulates phylogeny, so our ancestral identities manifest in our subconscious as we grow. This installation brings to light these atavistic fragments as seen in dreams. The screens are the boundaries of the inner spaces where our dreams play, like a film that plays in multiple theatres simultaneously in the single room of our heads, piercing the darkness with a first glimpse of our long-to-be desired illuminations.
Hayley Theyers is a lens-based artist resident in Karekare, in the Waitakere Ranges. Her art draws from the collective unconscious familiar to us from dreams. Knowing life in the shadows, she has learned to bring in light, which illuminates the unseen, sometimes creating new and deeper shadows. Her shows include I too have been to Arcadia (2016) and In the Dark we are without her Empress Light (2019), both at Black Asterisk gallery, of which PhotoForum's Nina Seja praised her work's ability to suggest a larger story beyond the frame”, The Art of Death (2019), Communicating Vessels (2021, also a book), Still Life/Wild Places at Katherine Mansfield House (2021), and the sell-out solo show, Suite of Tales (2023) at Pea Sea Art in Port Chalmers.
Theyers, who also directs music videos, and is known for her portraits of underground musicians for Phantom Billstickers' Musicians of Aotearoa poster series, displayed around the country during New Zealand Music Month 2017-19.
Children's Letters to God
Always evolving, conjuring fresh and fluid magic, combining the planned and unplanned and adding novel textural or textual finds into their sonic structures, creating magical trances overlaid with voices angelic and infernal, Children’s Letters To God is the bewitching incarnation of Aries Girl Power, in the persons of Poppy Ophelia (Blue Cheese) and Lainie Henderson. “Goated.” – NZ Musician.
Featuring special guests George Henderson and Duncan Bruce.
