Weekly Roundup: Friday 8th February

Weekly Roundup: Friday 8th February

Friday 8th February, 2019 5:49PM

We navigated through another short working week as Wednesday's Waitangi Day commemorations sliced our weekly dose of music news evenly down the middle, like a kind of sonic pizza. Delectable show announcements revealed this week included UK goth-rock icons The Sisters Of Mercy are returning to Aotearoa for a headline Auckland event this November, Finnish melodic death metal masters Omnium Gatherum are shredding eardrums in Auckland and Wellington this April, Canterbury indie-rock vets Clap Clap Riot are celebrating their 10th anniversary with a four date national tour in March, Minnesota internet sensation Yung Gravy is bringing his cheeky bangers to NZ for the first time this April, Byron Bay surfer-songwriter Kyle Lionhart is visiting our shores for an Auckland headline show in March, rising Dunedin pop songwriter Abby Wolfe is playing headline shows in Auckland and Dunedin this month, and UK tribute group London Calling are heading our way this July to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Clash's iconic third studio album... London Calling!

We proudly presented a solid selection of features this week – our roving reporter Fluffy cornered The Chats singer / bassist Eamon Sandwith for a wide-ranging and candid convo ahead of the viral Aussie pub-punk band's tour of Aotearoa (kicking off next week), and US songwriter Julien Baker spoke with Chris Cudby about her work with supertrio boygenius (with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus) and the pop-cultural impact of her Memphis hometown, in advance of her upcoming Auckland and Wellington shows. We were also privileged to premiere an emotionally tender new single from Berlin-based Silver Scroll nominated songwriter Lydia Cole, who is returning to New Zealand this month for a whirlwind homecoming tour with support from California indie-folk songsmith Mimi Gilbert.

Our Caught Live video for the week features Seattle cow-punk legends Supersuckers, who are storming our shores for a three date New Zealand tour this weekend, playing with Taranaki hardcore / punk icons Sticky Filth in Auckland and Raglan tonight and on Saturday, and tearing it up at Wellington's Valhalla on Sunday. They'll be playing their shit-kicking 1999 album The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll in its entirety for all three shows, wrap your eyes and ears around recent footage of Supersuckers busting out a cranking rendition of their song 'Breaking My Balls' in Lancaster...
