Tom Young Unveils Dreamy Single 'Lost In Blue'

Monday 15th April, 2019 2:35PM

One of many notable local singles to drop as part of Friday's title wave of releases was Orewa-based multi-instrumentalist Tom Young's (of The Melancholies and Leisure) standalone single 'Lost In Blue'. A folk-inflected slice of cinematic dream-pop, Young's understated yet infectious ballad's aural pleasures wash over listeners in waves, leaving a luminescent afterglow. Young's latest song is his third standalone release in just over a year – he promises more material is on the way and unveiled the inspirations behind 'Lost In Blue'...

"‘Lost in Blue’ is one of those weird songs that comes together in about 20 minutes. I wrote it about losing your way in the haze of depression and the self-centredness that usually comes with it. You're often so numb and drained of energy and compassion that you're no longer able to invest emotionally in those who matter most to you. The song is an acknowledgement, apology and promise to do better.

I’ve written 10-12 songs which I was planning on releasing as an album, but I realised I was rushing myself into it so I’m just going to keep putting songs out. I’ve just started and am more excited about developing my sound and song-writing before I officialise anything with an album. I’ve just started playing live too which was scary and fun, so I plan to do more of that around Auckland, then hopefully the rest of the country and Australia before the end of the year."
