Discwoman NZ Panel Discussions + DJ Workshops Announced

A special pair of free panel discussions and DJ workshops are taking place in Auckland and Wellington this May, in conjunction with two Aotearoa shows featuring Umfang and Shyboi of New York-based collective, booking agency, and event platform Discwoman. Organised by the team of local artists Aw B and k2k of Wellington's Moments collective, the panel discussions will feature Discwoman founding members Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, Christine McCharen-Tran, Emma Burgess-Olson and Shyboi in conversation with local moderators. A crucial voice in the international world of electronic music, Discwoman came together in 2014 as a platform for women and non-binary artists and have curated events across the globe, with the goal of highlighting and correcting the gender imbalance in club and festival lineups.

The panel discussions will be followed by free DJ workshops presented by Umfang covering the basics of CDJs, ideal for beginners keen to get started with DJing. The organisers note "we’d like to prioritise women, transgender and non-binary people for these workshops and there is a very strict capacity". We’re happy to reveal that we’ll be hosting Discwoman for a panel discussion + DJ workshop alongside their Wellington and Auckland shows. Discwoman founding members Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, Christine McCharen-Tran and Emma Burgess-Olson in company with SHYBOI will be in conversation with local moderators to talk about Discwoman - their start and evolution, diversity in electronic music and the climate of the music industry today. These panels are free and open to anyone who would like to attend!

We’re also incredibly lucky to have Emma (Umfang) hosting a DJ workshop which will cover the basics of CDJs. These workshops are free and ideal for beginners who are interested in learning to DJ. Please note we’d like to prioritise women, transgender and non-binary people for these workshops and there is a very strict capacity. The signups will work as a first in first served basis. All you need to bring is a USB with your favourite tunes!
