Here's Five: Earth Tongue Compile Their Favourite Phenomenal Videos

A.K. / Thursday 7th November, 2019 11:41AM

Psyched-out Pōneke duo Earth Tongue are one month away from a long overdue Floating Being Aotearoa album release tour, hitting the four main centres this December. Globe trotting fuzz-rock gurus Gussie Larkin (Mermaidens) and Ezra Simons (Onono) have been torn apart for much of the year as Larkin tours the UK and Europe twice over with her other project Mermaidens, but they're making their return a big one with two summer festival line up spots; Twisted Frequency New Years festival in Golden Bay and Nest Fest in Hawkes Bay. Larkin was so kind us to share with us her Top Five Phenomenal Video picks, along with the announcement of full list of supports for their nationwide tour...

1. Julie Driscoll - 'Season Of The Witch

This is one of those music videos that I’ve kept coming back to over the years. I want to live inside this set and steal Julie’s entire outfit! Creating the set must have taken a lot of work, but it’s essentially a simple video, which I’m really into. One location, one groovy lady in an ostrich coat, full vibes. What more do you need? This clip was used as inspiration for our video for 'The Well of Pristine Order'. We used cardboard cutouts instead of huge studio sets but you get the idea.

2. Zardoz trailer (1974)

1970s science fiction provides us with endless inspiration and confusion. We have no clue what this film is about but it was a big inspo for the ‘Probing the New Reality’ video. It’s got it all - Sean Connery, a floating stone head, a mirror pyramid. All this plus the amazing titles. We’re sold.

3. Raquel Welch - Space Dance

Raquel Welch was made famous by this iconic image of her in a doeskin bikini from the 1966 film One Million Years B.C. I discovered her through this far-out go-go dance video where she’s having a boogie in a space-age bikini with her martian mates. She’s killing it! I love the wacky sculptures in this video too. I think we were kinda trying to replicate these in our video for “Microscopic God” - but on a way smaller scale!

4. Logan’s Run trailer (1976)

From memory, everyone in this film has a tiny red crystal embedded in the palm of their hand. When you turn 30 the crystal starts to flash, meaning YOUR TIME IS UP. Then you have to run away from the “runners” and try not to die. Love the costumes, the lighting and the sets, not so much the ill-thought-out female characters!

5. Black Sabbath - 'War Pigs' at California Jam (1976)

I had to put this in because of the outfits. Ozzy is an absolute animal in his silver platforms and a silky cream shirt complete with purple tassels. Inspo for my next stage outfit perhaps?

For good measure, here's Undertheradar's pick for a phenomenal video – Earth Tongue's stunning, animation-adorned new science fiction clip for 'Probing the New Reality'...
