Matt Berninger Of The National Reveals Title Track To Solo Album 'Serpentine Prison'

A.K. / Thursday 21st May, 2020 11:27AM

After two decades of releasing sweet, soft-rock tunes and becoming one of Barack Obama's favourite bands, The National's Matt Berninger is riding solo for his next album Serpentine Prison. Over the past few years the US artist has been collaborating with other musicians such as EL VY, and soundtracking films including Between Two Ferns with Phoebe Bridgers, but after recording The National's latest album I Am Easy To Find, he "was ready to dig back into my own garbage, and this was the first thing that came out". 'Serpentine Prison', the record's title track, feels deeply personal, from mentions of nihilism, alcoholism, and his daughter laid bare in Berninger's stark vocals. The self-directed, in-studio video shows the songwriter in peak sincerity; black and white candid moments, eyes closed vocal takes, and even a cute dog. Originally due to perform in Aotearoa with The National and Phoebe Bridgers last month, the shows have been tentatively postponed until December, watch this space for updates, and take a listen to the first single from Serpentine Prison here...

Matt Berninger's debut solo album 'Serpentine Prison' is out Friday 2nd October via Book Records.
