Cut Off Your Hands Announce 'HLLH' Album Release + Final Shows

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 19th August, 2020 10:00AM

We could all use some thrills to keep us going right now, and Auckland indie groovers Cut Off Your Hands have re-emerged at the eleventh hour with exciting news of a pair of headline shows in Auckland and Wellington this October, celebrating the launch of their long-awaited third studio album HLLH (Higher Lows and Lower Highs). Underlining the can't-miss quality of the events, these will be the veteran group's final ever live appearances, triumphantly concluding a storied career which kicked off all the way back in 2006, when they initially started out under the name Shaky Hands.

Beloved for such student radio favourites as 'Oh Girl' and 'Still Fond', Cut Off Your Hands have had a creative resurgence in recent years, steadily dropping a trio of infectious dance-punk singles in the lead up to their new record HLLH, which was created in collaboration with production wizard Jeremy Toy aka Leonard Charles (The Leonard Simpson Duo, She's So Rad). These forthcoming shows make up for their earlier scheduled last live appearance at the Strange Universe #001 extravaganza, which was frustratingly scuppered due to Covid-19. Pre-order your own vinyl edition of 'HLLH' now via Flying Out and join frontman Nick Johnston and the gang for a much-deserved final send off at the dates below...

Press release:

Iconic indie and post-punk group Cut Off Your Hands say farewell by announcing their final shows, which will coincide with the release of their long-awaited third album HLLH (Higher Lows and Lower Highs).

Fall into the colourful rhythm of everyday life, of mums with prams and gym clothes. Of small computers and meal plans. The beautiful sparkle of simplicity, like the sun on the ocean or a car bonnet. Influenced by the likes of Grace Jones and Talking Heads, HLLH explores the vulnerability and joy of living, of coping with change, through a textural and multi-layered sonic wonderland.

IN HLLH elements of funk and dance music interweave with the soulful croon of lead vocalist Nick Johnston, constructing vivid and enchanting landscapes in which both the importance of loving each other and the complexities of human relationship are exposed under the guise of head-bopping summer anthems.

The band worked with producer Jeremy Toy throughout the songwriting process, falling in love with old influences and finding inspiration in the candor of self-reflection and shared human experience that comes from rich relationships with others. HLLH’s journey seamlessly flows through pieces of ambience into Cut Off Your Hands signature ear-worm - deftly crafted pop songs displaying a rich diversity that works as a bridging of the bands celebrated oeuvre. The result is a body of work that pairs honesty and vulnerability with tight grooves and colourful melodies.
