Girl Friday Drop Debut Album 'Androgynous Mary'
It's hard to believe that Androgynous Mary is Girl Friday's debut album, as it's so utterly put together, artfully toeing the line between cynical punk and fresh, well-rounded pop-rock. The four piece have a devastating 10,000 odd kilometres between them at the moment, with Virginia Pettis, Libby Hsieh and Sierra Scott celebrating release day in LA, and Vera Ellen all the way back here in blustery Pōneke (it seems appropriate to mention the recent emergence of a Vera Ellen compilation called lonely singles mix). Although there's a darkness to Androgynous Mary, the collection is energising in its squealing guitars and waves of fuzz, probably best consumed in a sold out arena in a post-virus future. Single 'Public Bodies' worked out to be a fitting overture for the full ten-track drop, foreshadowing its charming guitar melodies, disdainful lyrics, and frequent launches into rowdy punk-rock. TGIGF! Thank god it's Girl Friday...
