The Phoenix Foundation's New Album 'Friend Ship' Has Landed

Ahoy! The seventh album from Aotearoa's favourite sextet The Phoenix Foundation has cruised into the local pop harbour, and dropped anchor into the sea of incredible Friday releases. That's to say, after a run of toe-tapping, rock-the-boat single drops, the band's latest full length album Friend Ship has berthed and we're all hopping aboard. Okay I'll stop now.

Friend Ship has been a long time coming, as The Phoenix Foundation have been up to their elbows in exciting extra-curricular activities in the five years since their last album Give Up Your Dreams. They clearly did not give up their dreams, as they've been busy writing music with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, soundtracking Taika Waititi's Hunt For The Wilderpeople, and even creating scores for VR. It's well worth the wait, throwing you into another world on breath taking tracks like 'Transit Of Venus' featuring the NZSO and some lovely whistling, then bringing the funk bass on 'Landline' and 'My Kitchen Rules'. Opening track 'Guru' sounds the most, say, "Phoenixy", a good place to start for die hard fans easing into new and rewarding sounds. The Phoenix Foundation crew take flight next month on their nationwide album release tour, so press play on Friend Ship and see where you can listen live below.

“These themes of modern anxiety started to emerge in my songs ... The album is sort of a post-apocalyptic love letter from the future to the present. Looking back into the past for that sense of human connection we have lost in our screen-based existence." — Samuel Flynn Scott
