Watch Ha The Unclear's Video For 'Strangers'
Today marks the first date of Ha The Unclear's keenly-awaited spring tour of Aotearoa, celebrating the release of their latest single 'Strangers'. Launched earlier this month and already ruling the airwaves, the song has received heartwarming new visuals courtesy of directorial team Vision Thing and created with the support of NZ On Air — reimagining the Ōtepoti four piece's very catchy tale of everyday interactions with deft puppet wizardry and charming dialogue. Starring the band's Michael Cathro, the clip also throws a spot of childbirth drama in the mix, getting pulse rates right up there. Hum along while watching below and don't miss Ha The Unclear playing on a stage near you this October and November...
Michael Cathro unpacked the lyrical origins of 'Strangers': "There's this indie film called Cube where the characters wake up in this cube complex with no idea how they got there and they have to solve problems to get from cube to cube and escape. It slowly emerges that each character has been selected for a skill that they have and there are massive personality clashes. I began to imagine my elevator rides as if it was going to get stuck, and if it did how would these strangers all work together to escape? This extended to wondering about our natural proclivities for social roles. But by the time I came to writing the song it kind of evolved to become more about the web of social connectivity and how both the thick as well as the delicate strands tie all of our narratives together. Now pandemic contact tracing has made visible all these (physical) interactions we have on a daily basis."
