Anna Coddington Shares New Album 'Beams'

Annabel Kean / Friday 27th November, 2020 11:21AM

At one point in the album-making process Anna Coddington was of the mind to call her new album Do I Exist?, but decided that was "a bit too heavy and up it's own arse for an album that, although it's sometimes on the heavier side kaupapa-wise, is actually quite an enjoyable listen". 'Quite an enjoyable listen' is a tremendous understatement of Beams, Coddington's fourth solo album and first in four years since 2016's Luck/Time. Finally out today, the ten-track collection will have your jaw dropped and eyes welled up from Coddington's larger-than-life soul chops and deeply personal lyricism. In Beams' fledgling stages, she says she "stepped back one day to take an overview of what songs I had written in the 4 years since my last album and motherhood emerged as the thread throughout them", even on tracks she hadn't realised were about her children at the time. Polishing the pop stylings of Coddington's massive voice, award-winning producers Steph Brown and Fen Ikner (aka Lips) came aboard for a collaborative recording process, marrying emotive storytelling with upbeat pop sensibilities. Match your first listen to Beams with a read of our recent interview with Anna Coddington here, then watch her perform the whole album live from Roundhead Studios here...
