This time last year, Merk was gearing up to release his sparkling gem of a single 'H.N.Y.B' and was in the fundraising stage of his SXSW journey. Then Covid reared its ugly head and stopped Merk in his tracks. Save for a brief stint as alter ego Swirl Jam, the solo stylings of Mark Perkins have been mostly dormant since February 2020, yet today he returns with another solid gold indie-pop slammer: 'GOD'. The track is one of a handful of Perkins' singles out since his Taite Award winning debut album Swordfish in 2017, and his second on Humblebrag Records ahead of his upcoming sophomore collection. The song grew from a period of unpacking his own religious upbringing, which then coincided with hitting rock bottom, and left him with both "the sweet resignation that comes with the feeling that things couldn’t get any worse" and the momentum to nut out his own beliefs. Here's what he had to say about it:

"When writing ‘GOD’ I thought I was in full irony mode, I was trying to make a cool song out of potentially the least cool thing one could sing about ... It wasn’t until well into the songwriting process I realised that as tongue in cheek as I was being, I was also being entirely earnest."

With support from the champs at NZ On Air, Perkins' teamed up once again with superstar director Martin Sagadin for a Lynchian glitchfest, imagining the Merk crew performing in a stark white shoreside cave. Well, that's what I took from it anyway...

Merk's latest single 'GOD' is out now via Humblebrag Records.
