Kōtiro Shares Debut EP 'High-Def Multinational'
I was first witness to the talents of Ana Scotney a few years ago in surreal, dark-comedy Mr. Burns at Q Theatre, then again when she portrayed The Breaker Upperers' Sepa on the silver screen, and now she's gone and Animorphed into expansive, genre-defying Kōtiro for her debut EP High-Def Multinational. The collection released over Waitangi weekend via Coco Solid's imprint Kuini Qontrol and the excellent Sonorous Circle crew, with only single 'Force Field' lending a clue to what High-Def Multinational had in store before its release. Scotney leans heavily into loops and samples of her own voice, to the point where I'm not sure where the lip smacking stops, and her own, unwavering vocals melt into a bass line or massive wall of synth. 'Fuk Forever' is one of six tracks on the EP unpacking "the complexities of place and belonging in Aotearoa today", and it's completely hypnotising. Repeated lyrics allude to a summer romance, literally spelling out 'Desire me Ana', with a lack of punctuation leaving the subject of desire up to the listener. In total, High-Def Multinational ticks just over the ten minute mark, leaving you with space to leave it on loop for extra close listening and sonic exploring...
