Mermaidens Unveil New Single / Video 'Soft Energy'
Those marvellous Mermaidens have delivered their catchiest, dreamiest cut yet. Fresh out today, 'Soft Energy' is the single teased with the announcement of their Soft Energy New Zealand Tour, bookended by the inaugural Pōneke and Tāmaki Mermgrown festivals. The new track is stupidly good, and ushers in the next Mermaidens era after 2019 album Look Me In The Eye won the trio an Aotearoa Music Award for best Album Cover and nomination for best alternative album. Vocalist Gussie Larkin took the director's chair for the 'Soft Energy' video, and with support from NZ On Air and director of photography Ezra Simons (Earth Tongue), has created a blush-tinted world for the band to expose their soft, tender hearts and ask those with a "tough and detached exterior ... to act with softness and vulnerability". I am loving Mermaidens' pairing of pinks, pearls and glitter with their reliably grunty guitar. New Merms who dis? Dis is plush, pop-star aesthetic Merms to go with 'Soft Energy's infectious pop melodies. Listen below, and find out where you can catch the live Mermaidens experience here...
