The NewBop Quintet Wellington Jazz Festival + Auckland Shows Announced
Showcasing a crème de la crème of Aotearoa jazz artists, Tāmaki Makaurau's The NewBop Quintet will be bringing the good stuff to Pōneke's Meow and their hometown's Tuning Fork this coming June. Proudly boasting a "serious players, no bullshit" lineup, The NewBop Quintet's membership includes Mike Booth on trumpet, Pete France on saxophone, Kevin Field on piano, Wil Goodinson on bass and the legendary Frank Gibson, Jr (famous to a generation of London Bar frequenting punters, read his AudioCulture profile here) on drums. They promise nothing less than a celebration of the '50s / '60s hard bop era — think Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderly, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins — delivering their own take on standards plus original compositions too at the following one-off events, including a headline slot as part of The Wellington Jazz Festival...

Press release:
The 1950’s and 60’s was the era of greats like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderly, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins – through them the HardBop sound was born.
Now, Auckland based the NewBop Quintet shines a fresh light on HardBop whilst recapturing the joy of that era and flouting a close link with the blues and a strong rhythmical presence. The NewBop Quintet revisits the HardBop ethos in stunning original tunes and a new take on standards like So What and Straight, No Chaser.
Formed in 2019 the NewBop Quintet hosts the mecca of New Zealand jazz musicians – Mike Booth on Trumpet, Pete France on Saxophone, Kevin Field on Piano, Wil Goodinson on Bass and Frank Gibson, Jr on Drums.
Only performing live at The Wellington Jazz Festival and Auckland venue the Tuning Fork in June this is a rare opportunity to see these world-renowned musicians in their most current band the NewBop Quintet.
