Theia's TE KAAHU Shares Live Single 'Kiwi Weka'

Annabel Kean / Friday 10th December, 2021 2:25PM

TE KAAHU, the reo Māori project of Tāmaki hip hop queen Theia (Waikato-Tainui, Ngaati Tiipaa), has shared a stunning live rendition of waiata 'Kiwi Weka', recorded at Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae as part of her RNZ Live Session earlier this year. Due to drop her debut album as TE KAAHU in the new year, today's heart-melting single won't actually feature on that collection of original songs, as it was written by her late great grandmother Mite Te Aho Karaka Kukutai. Released instead as a stand alone track, TE KAAHU says she wanted to record 'Kiwi Weka' "as a resource for my iwi and also as her great granddaughter" after realising the song wasn't on any streaming sites. Totally goosebumps-inducing, the intimate live number features HINA on backing vocals, Delaney Davidson on lap steel guitar and Jol Mulholland on acoustic guitar...

The debut album from TE KAAHU drops in 2022.
