Sojøurn Drop New EP 'Mystic Ways' + Animated Video
Only richly infused surf-rock can make any non-surfer feel like they’re riding waves, which is exactly what Sojøurn’s new Mystic Ways EP does. Written and recorded over 12 months in their Mangawhai HQ alongside producer Connor Jaine, the genre-melting reggae / dub / psych crew's six track collection showcases the band’s "journey through change, adversity, loss and positive growth". The lyrics surge to meet the music — James Finlay’s rippling arpeggios and Jacob O’Brien’s sax swirl around and uplift the sun-warmed vocals of frontman Isaac Hunter. Mystic Ways is about not caring too much about the destination as much as the journey, but hoping for the good times and company to return (trying not to sink but swim, basically, which is another way to describe my own surfing skills).
The newly launched psychedelic title is accompanied by a video that sweeps us away on a bad trip through a labyrinthine and sinister chase, animated by Steph Mary Barnett. My favourite moment from this nautical nightmare is the birds-eye emergence of a maze from the blocks of a COVID-19 QR tracer stamped onto the side of an alien spaceship — hit play on Mystic Ways and check out the clip below...
“‘Mystic Ways’ is a celebration of the good times; and a mature acknowledgement of how they got there. It’s the fresh soundtrack for a timeless summer, and exactly what we all need right now.”
‘Mystic Ways’ is out today on major streaming services via Meow The Label.
