Asta Rangu Drop Single / Video 'LLPLZA'
With just two weeks to go before the launch of debut album ENTRTNMNT, Ōtepoti's student radio chart-topping Asta Rangu keep the power-pop energy high on third single 'LLPLZA'. Officially pronounced "Lalapalooza" (meaning an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event — which Perry Farrell's famous touring festival is named after), the song is given added visual dimension with an epoch-spanning montage of vintage western public domain film footage, sliced 'n' diced together by songwriter Richard Ley-Hamilton (Males). Touring their new record alongside interstellar doom crew Space Bats, Attack! in June, Ley-Hamilton shed light on his creative approach for Asta Rangu's ENTRTNMNT...
"I have always been fascinated with the feeling of bittersweet - memories or moments that can be joyous and sad at the same time. As I tend to write the music first, I began with chords that had an open, melancholic quality, then lifted the tempo to give it a stronger pulse - more hopeful or elated sounding. The lyrics are a running-together of wordplay, surreal imagery and introspection, trying to paint a picture around this feeling.
ENTRTNMNT promises to be quite diverse tonally, but the approach to each song was the same - create a musical environment where the song and its message are best served. I truly believe 'LLPLZA' achieves this, and sitting towards the end of the album, its pensive optimism helps to resolve the darker and more doubtful themes of earlier tracks.
It's the greatest feeling to finally realise the vision brought about by that first stumbling strum and mumbled nonsense." - Richard Ley-Hamilton
