Tāmaki Makaurau electronic artist Amamelia aka Amelia Berry (Babyteeth, Van Staden & Böhm, The Forbin Project) has announced the dawning of the age of Bananamelia!, launching her new album of the same name in November via Sunreturn. Named after an everyday traffic manoeuvre, lux lead single 'Gap Selection' feels even more sonically ambitious than Amamelia's breakout 2020 debut album WOW! a veritable trip hop fruit bowl of post-exotica strings, swooping synths and playful percussive flourishes. Sounding not unlike a classic Mo Wax / Ninja Tune release thrust into hurly burly contemporary Aotearoa, or perhaps the best departure lounge music you'll hear this year, it's time to board your first class flight to Bananamelia! — hit play below and preorder the limited vinyl LP edition HERE...

"Gap Selection's title is a driving thing... I have had my restricted licence test cancelled a few times due to the pandemic, and I've had to learn about the old gap selection more than my fair share. It's kind of a play on the way the track stops and starts, getting a lot of its drama and variation out of stopping and starting kinda out of the blue.

Gap Selection was built off of a sample from Marble Run (Track 1 on Bananamelia!). I wanted to take it down from the 160bgm jungle tempo to transform it into something like a mid 90s downtempo track a la Yoshinori Sunahara or something from the Ninja Tune catalogue.

I had a lot of fun putting together the synth lead, recreating that 70s via 90s raw analog sound on an old Jen SX-1000, going through the part twice and "playing" the portmanteau time to get the kind of weird variable detune thing going on". — Amamelia

'Bananamelia!' launches on Thursday 3rd November via Sunreturn — limited vinyl LP preorders available HERE.
