Soft Bait Unveil Single / Video 'True Stories'

Tāmaki post-punkers Soft Bait made a smashing first impression with June's debut 'Big' and have today unleashed single number two 'True Stories', hammered home with a gripping minimalist video filmed and edited by the band's Ezra Simons (Earth Tongue). Perhaps inspired by Andy Warhol's love for covering the walls and ceiling of his '60s Factory studio HQ entirely with aluminium foil, Simons created a claustrophobic metallic interior for the monochromatic clip, like an all-engulfing tin foil hat within which vocalist Josh Hunter maniacally rants and writhes. A high-wire reflection on the red hot topic of far-fetched conspiracy theories leaking into everyday thought via a bit of algorithmically generated, bias confirming 'online research', Hunter mirrors those amongst us who've come to the paranoid conclusion "they're probably true". Hit play on the (nearly) single-shot visuals for 'True Stories', recorded and produced by Peter Ruddell (Sulfate, Wax Chattels)...

“Based on a true story? Probably true? Sounds about right? True Stories embodies the rant of a conspiracy theorist that has seen the “truth” through many hours on the internet. It’s about the eager willingness to accept any article as fact to suit one’s narrative, and the compulsive need to let everyone know the “real truth.

We wanted to have a bit of fun with this video by giving ourselves the constraint of shooting it in a single shot... We loved the idea of a completely tin foiled room, it’s such a synonymous material with conspiracy theories and to cover an entire room in it, removes itself from any specific time and place. We leant into the hand-made aesthetic (something from a b-grade movie), but the result became something aesthetically quite striking.” — guitarist Patrick Hickley

'True Stories' is out now on major streaming platforms.
