Watch TE KAAHU's In My Room Live Session

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 14th September, 2022 12:18PM

Recent star of our Trash Recital series, Theia's (Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Tīpa) reo Māori project TE KAAHU performed in a new In My Room Live Session for Rolling Stone Australia. Launched in sync with Te Wiki o te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week (which runs to 18th September), the 2022 APRA Maioha Award finalist was joined by bandmates Jol Mulholland, Levi Gemmell and Amy Boroevich (Te Rarawa, Ngāti Raukawa) aka HINA for the recording session at Tāmaki Makaurau's The Lab. They played beautiful new versions of 'E Taku Huia Kaimanawa', 'Rangirara' and 'Taupiri', all from debut album Te Kaahu O Rangi, with Theia explaining her personal connection with each of the waiata in both te reo and English.

TE KAAHU will be playing two special events celebrating Te Kaahu O Rangi this spring, joined at Raglan's The Yard by taonga pūoro practioner Komako-Aroha, and at Ōtaki's Māoriland Hub by Te-Whanganui-a-Tara-based artist / producer Mo Etc. Grab tickets while you can, plus experience a taste of what to look forward to with the clip below...

"What I love about this session for Rolling Stone is the vulnerability and tenderness with which the waiata are delivered. I hope that people enjoy hearing them like this as much as we loved performing them."
— Theia
