Spotlight: King Gizzard Headlining New Plymouth's Bowl Of Brooklands in January 2023

Ngāmotu / New Plymouth gig-goers are in for a treat in January 2023, as Australia's mighty King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are rolling into town for a headline extravaganza in the leafy surrounds of Bowl of Brooklands. Gargantuan in both output and sound, it can be a bit of a challenge even for longterm fans to keep pace with the hyper-prolific Melbourne six-piece, who not only famously released five studio records in 2017 alone, but are all set to have five long players out this year too (!), launching their 23rd album Changes this coming Friday.

Embracing an eclectic, playfully maximalist approach from their formation in 2010 onwards, King Giz's everything-including-the-kitchen-sink vision encompasses psych / prog-rock, mutant boogie, environmentally conscious thrash metal, synth-pop, electronic dance, jazz-fusion, acoustic folk and literally anything else that tickles their fancy. When I last caught them playing a hometown gig in 2019, King Giz's live set crammed all those elements into a sonic smörgåsbord of good times with guitar pyrotechnics galore.

Sure to be a live highlight of our summer festival season, delve into a selection of tunes from this year's crop of albums from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard below, and don't miss the gang of Stu Mackenzie, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Harwood and Michael Cavanagh in beautiful New Plymouth on 6th January, as part of their wider Aotearoa travels early next year. They'll be playing with local special guests Half Hexagon (Yolanda Fagan, Julien Dyne and James Milne aka Lawrence Arabia), Carnivorous Plant Society and Taranaki's Greenbathing...
