Vincent H.L Shares New Album 'Golden Sun'
Moving at his own speed to whittle his latest solo creation, Golden Sun is the first new bunch of tunes from Vincent H.L (Magic Factory, Teen Wolf, Whipping Cats) since the Tāmaki Makaurau artist's accurately titled 2018 debut album Weird Days. Out today via the champs at 1:12 Records on highly covetable slime green vinyl LP, Vincent H.L's voice sounds as rich as his record's namesake as he rattles off nine indelibly catchy "nightmare country" numbers beamed in from the outskirts of the super city — as the accompanying info notes, "growing up on the fringes is inevitable when your parents are commercial veggie growers in 1980's Kumeu and you are of mixed Chinese and European whakapapa".
Nimble on the fretboard too, Vincent H.L rocks to his own beat on 'Catfish', declares "say what you feel man let it all out" on 'Into The Woods', recounts the sorry tale of a down on his luck drifter on 'Jerry's Lament' and fires up the foot-stomping boogie on title track 'Golden Sun' — at times conjuring mental images of Neil Young getting into a telepod accident with K Records-era Beck. The sonic storyteller will be treating punters to a launch event tonight with Thee Golden Geese, before hitting the highway with bandmates Magic Factory (who also have a new record out today) for double release ragers in Raglan and Lyttelton, plus his old band Teen Wolf (with Chelsea Nikkel and Brad Fafejta) are reforming for a gig with The Situations in early July. Featuring contributions from Matt Short, James Dansey and Jamie Lee Smith, grab yourself a copy of Golden Sun from all good record stores (plus on the door at The Wine Cellar tonight) and hit play below...
“On Golden Sun I have really gotten into guitars. Hanging out with Matt (Short) had a real influence on that. I wanted to move on from the doom-metal country of Weird Days and really pull the songs out of the sludge”.
